The Australian working holiday visa – 5 crucial tips for making the most of it

When I look back at myself as a freckly pomme fresh off the flight and reeling from jetlag I know that if I could find work over my working holiday visa, absolutely anyone could. I had essentially no skills and no amount of desperate pleading could make up for it! It’s what you do before you leave home, that truly gives you the edge- so here are my best Australian working holiday visa tips. Delve deeper into how to make the most of your precious work abroad experience!

1.Hit the ground running.
There are so many similar backpackers, how can you stand out? My tactic was to be  job-ready from the very start. An employer will almost always choose the candidate who can get started straight away, and that will leave you the only onein your hostel getting a job in australia on a working holiday visa.

Before you even land you can open an international movers bank account like this one with NAB. This will prove immensely valuable in establishing who you are for potential landlords as well.

2.  Once your plane touches down you can nip online and get yourself a Tax File Number, instantly. This is basically a tax thing-y that you need to work. Brits, consider it a glorified National Insurance Number.

3. I missed out on a few jobs through not having an Australian Business Number (ABN). This allows you to work self-employed and is free. Not only that, but you can still work as an employee any time too, so grab one just in case you need it.

4. Get a stonking exchange rate. For the first few weeks your Aussie bank account’s going to be drier than a goon at a party, so grab a currency card and top it up with pounds, then withdraw in dollars. A simple route to a cracking exchange rate- I chose Fairfx.

5. Australia LOVES qualifications. You cannot even pull a pint in this country without a certificate, and what involves a 2 minute VHS presentation in Britain is in Oz a $100 diploma. The only way of getting a job in australia on a working holiday visa is to get the paper you need and you’ll soon earn back the cost! To work with any alcohol you need an RSA so book one straight after you arrive- that’s one of my best tips for a working holiday in Australia.
